At the National Action Civics Collaborative (NACC) we believe in the power of young people. Youth are not apathetic about their communities, they are uninvited. NACC organizations employ Action Civics–an experiential, youth-centered approach to civic education–to create a world that invites young people to take collective action inside and outside the classroom–transforming their schools, neighborhoods and cities. We are a growing network of educators, researchers, organizations, and youth workers working to reform civic education, amplify youth voices, and ultimately transform democracy.*

If it weren’t for the Collaborative to guide me along the way, I wouldn’t even consider higher education. It has taught me the skills necessary to succeed.
As long as I work in Philadelphia, I will always connect students with POWER and the Collaborative. They do such a magnificent job immersing young people in vital skill and citizenship development activities.
If we can instill in 7th and 8th graders a sense of urgency and importance in their civic participation, then they will move onto high school as aware and active participants in any democratic process, whether it be running for student body or protesting a social issue they feel passionate about.
In other classes at school, you go in, you sit down, and you take a bunch of notes. Then you have to just go home and memorize everything. But with Generation Citizen you go into a classroom where you know that someone is listening to you and they actually take your ideas into consideration and work with your idea to make it into a reality…just by giving us examples of other people who have made a change. I’ve always thought that unless you have an adult with you, if you are under 18 you are not really heard. But our Democracy Coaches showed me that if you make your voice heard and you push yourself and become your own motivation you can actually accomplish a lot”
Mikva has definitely impacted the person I am today. If it wasn’t for Mikva I don’t think that I would want to study Political Science in college. Mikva has made me into a stronger and more independent person who will fight for what she believes in. I don’t want to be one of those people who are always complaining about how they hate the system and do nothing about it. I want to create change.
Before I started Mikva, I laughed at politicians and the government in general. I thought it was just a bunch of corruption. However, my mind has switched gears after two years at Mikva. I have realized the power that the people have and how simple but effective student voice can be. I think about being a politician myself now and how my voice plus others can change society
I was very apathetic before, I just didn’t care. I didn’t think my voice mattered. Through Mikva I learned that one person can make a difference.
They (students) are already using what they learned to identify the roots of problems they’re having. They are better able to access decision makers and work towards improving their school.
I think these projects allowed students to gain confidence in their abilities – giving speeches, meeting with decision makers, presenting at Civics Fair – I saw some of the most shy students really blossom.
Working with Earth Force over the last six years has changed the way I teach and the way my students learn. While environmental science is nice to talk about, it is meant to be experienced. The support and coordination with Earth Force has showed our students that ‘Science is REAL!
Earth Force has been an important part of establishing new community connections to action-civics. This is a unique environment of many different educational outreach efforts. They [Earth Force] have helped me provide a unique opportunity for the community of formal and non-formal educators. They have demonstrated specific examples of how to engage youth and community stakeholders so that there is youth voice and real life application.
Earth Force has a strategic vision to enable communities and partners to engage youth via proven process and training. Through this engagement we have seen outstanding results in the confidence, leadership and engagement in our participating students!
